Villasimius

It is located about 50 kms from Cagliari and it is certainly the best resort on the south eastern coast of Sardinia.

The coastal road from Cagliari to Villasimius is breathtaking with dramatic cliffs and incredible transparent waters below.
Villasimius is located on the northern tip of a promontory that extends to the marine protected area of Capo Carbonara. There are many wonderful beaches in this area such as Cala Piscareddus, Spiaggia del Riso (rice beach), Porto Giunco and Simius’ beach to name a few.

On the tip of the promontory sits a lighthouse. From this vantage point visitors can admire the beautiful view of the small islands of Serpentara and Cavoli which are both inhabited. Off the island of Cavoli, 11m under the water is the statue of the Madonna del Naufrago (our Lady of the shipwreck) crafted by local sculpture Pinuccio Sciola. Standing 3m high the statue can be seen from the surface with a mask, if visitors are interested in a better view organized glass bottom trips are also available, The festival dedicated to this work of art, which takes place in July, is not to be missed.

Divers and snorkeling enthusiasts can enjoy the many wrecks and marine life that occupy the surrounding waters. Sea turtles, dolphins, dentex, octopus and crayfish are only some examples of the marine life that can be found. In recent years the Monk seal has also been seen. As for shipwrecks the most ancient is  a Roman ship, dated 250 BC containing amphora and ceramics. For those of you interested in history and archaeology a visit to the Archaeological Museum of Villasimius is recommended.
