Cagliari

Walking around Cagliari today one feels surrounded by ancient history. Buildings that were constructed throughout different periods in Cagliari’s great history still stand proudly intact. Karalis, as it was once called, is the Capital of Sardinia and is located on the southern coastline, looking out over the beautiful Golfo degli Angeli. The city was probably founded by the Phoenicians. It was a very important commercial and maritime centre during the Carthaginian domination. Cagliari fell under Roman dominion in 238 B.C. and prospered during this period, it became a municipal and principal office of the bishop. Some examples of the Roman period can still be seen today such as the amphitheatre and Villa Tigellio.

Cagliari experienced renewed growth during Pisan rule in the 13th century, the ‘Castello’ quarter was fortified  with great walls and towers for its protection against invasion. New quarters were developed such as Marina, Stampace and Villanova. Later Sardinia became a Spanish colony, and during this period the city suffered a decline in prosperity which didn’t improve under the control of the Savoy Family when they took control in the early 18th century. The Savoys ruled until Italy was unified in the mid 19th century.

Visitors and residents alike appreciate the old city with its narrow streets, palm tree lined piazzas and variety of architecture. Although bombed during the Second World War many of the finest buildings survive,  the towers of San Pancrazio and l'Elefante, the two gateways of Porta Cristina and Porte Dei Due Leoni, the Cathedral of Santa Maria, and the National Archaeological Museum. The old city is very much alive today with many residents and university students occupying the apartments lining the streets and alleys.

Only 5 kms away from the city centre lies the beautiful beach of Poetto. This is a long sandy safe beach, 11 kms in all, with shallow clear warm water. This is a very popular meeting point amongst the locals all year round. In front of it is the promontory La Sella del Diavolo (The Devil’s Saddle) which frames the beach beautifully and makes a dramatic background for photos. Wind surfers, kite surfers, jet ski riders enjoy the water all year round. In the evenings the many bars and kiosks spread along the beach offer live music for different tastes. Small seafood restaurants serve fresh fish and Ricci ‘Sea Urchins’ accompanied by a glass of white wine. The harbour of Marina Piccola is a favourite for couples who like to end the day and start the evening with a walk together as the sun sets over Cagliari. If you fancy a little shopping there are stalls selling crafts and jewellery, while an ice cream or cappuccino make the experience all the sweeter.
The capital city together with the south of Sardinia still retains its original character, mass tourism hasn’t arrived, which makes this region very special.
